The Assisted Death Controversy - Ethical Dilemmas/Legal Vehicles

This presentation addresses the topic of assisted death (specifically assisted suicide and euthanasia). The first part of the presentation examines how and if assisted death is practiced in other jurisdictions in Europe and the United States. It includes statistics and factors that are taken into consideration for assisted death. The second part of the presentation examines three Canadian cases on assisted death: Rodriguez, Carter and LeBlanc.

In November 2011, the Health Law Section had an excellent presentation by the then provincial Ombudsman, Irene Hamilton and by Gail Perry, Sr. Legislative and Policy Analyst, Manitoba Ombudsman.  They gave a very informative session with respect to developments in privacy and access legislation specific to Manitoba but also with respect to the role and powers of the Ombudsman’s Office
