Wills & Estates Law Section Report 2011‐2012

  • July 05, 2012

Peter Glowacki and John Delaney acted as Co‐Chairs of the Section, Caroline Kiva is Vice‐Chair and Marvin Giesbrecht was a Member‐at‐Large. The Wills and Estates Section held 3 CPD sessions this past year. On November 28, 2011, representatives of Erassure spoke about “Changing Dynamics for Estate Trustees”. On January 20, 2012 (the Mid‐Winter Conference), Leilani Kagan and James McDonald gave a presentation relative to “Cross‐Border Planning for Canadians with US Interests” and on May 11, 2012, Marshall Braunstein and Suzanne Swanton spoke about “Planning for Disabled Beneficiaries”. In addition, we were again involved with the Office of the Public Trustee and The Winnipeg Foundation in the joint planning and presentation of Will Week  ‐  Estate Planning for Your Future. These public information sessions about the importance of making a Will, Power of Attorney and Health Care Directive are held at various venues throughout Winnipeg. Approximately 710 members of the public attended this year’s sessions. Finally, the ongoing efforts to update the Queen’s Bench Tariff applicable to estate matters continues and we are cautiously optimistic that an update will be in place in due course.

Respectfully submitted,
Peter J. Glowacki, Co‐Chair
