Civil Litigation Section Report 2010‐2011

  • August 11, 2011

During the 2010‐2011 session (September 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011), the MBA Civil Litigation Section divided its efforts between a scholarly treatise on developments in the law and practical matters.

The Civil Section put on a Continuing Professional Development seminar at the 2011 MBA Mid‐Winter on Friday, January 21, 2011.  The out of town presenter was Dr. Russell Brown of the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta.  He spoke on the subject of “Good News and Bad News for Defendants, and Bad New and Good News for Plaintiffs: Developments in Cause‐in‐Fact since Resurfice, and a new/old way of proving Cause‐in‐Fact”.  The topic was well attended, enjoyably presented and generated some interesting discussion.  A helpful paper was provided to attendees.

The second meeting occurred April 29, 2011.  Madame Justice Shawn Greenberg, Mr. Rick Handlon of Pitblado LLP and Mr. Bob Sokalski of Hill Sokalski Walsh Trippier LLP put on a very entertaining seminar on The Art of Direct and Cross‐Examination: A Perspective from the Bench and the Bar.   The meeting was well attended and provided helpful practical insight on the subject.

Respectfully submitted,
Bernice R. Bowley, Chair
