Legal Research Section: Outline of Activities September 1, 2010 to June 30, 201

I have been asked to provide an annual report in respect of the activities of the Manitoba Bar Association's Technology and Intellectual Property Law Section for the 2010 ‐ 2011 programming year.

October 20, 2010 – Careers and International Law ‐George Derwin‐ Held at Robson Hall George Derwin of Manitoba Hydro International spoke about how international law can compose a portion of legal practice in Manitoba. A panel of lawyers made up of George Derwin, Daniel Watts, Lori LaBine and Philip Watts took questions from students regarding how international law plays a role in their practice.

Activities of the Equality Issues Section from September, 2010 to June, 2011:

Paul Hesse, stepped down as Acting Chair of the Manitoba Immigration Section in February 2011, as he is running for Provincial Election this October 2011

We began the year by polling our members to see what their interests were.  Returns were spotty.

In the 2010‐2011 Section year, the Tax Section co‐presented a CRA Round Table on October 14, 2010.   The tax practitioners attending the Round Table heard presentations by Canada Revenue Agency and Manitoba Finance officials on a number of topical issues.    On June 27, 2011 the Tax Section had a presentation on the directors’ liability and the due diligence defence.

The Section was involved in the following activities for the year 2010/2011

Since last fall, the Section has held 3 substantive educational sessions. The first event which took place in October 2010 consisted of a presentation by John Stefaniuk on The Remediation of a Large Industrial Contaminated Site...

On February 9, 2011, the MBA Health Law Section hosted a meeting of its members on the topic of “Critical Incidents”, focusing on The Regional Health Authorities Act sections creating them and the applicable Manitoba Evidence Act statutory privilege.
