In September of 2015, Jessica Schofield (Chair) attended the CBA meeting of the Young Lawyer Directorate in Montreal, Quebec. This conference included discussions with respect to the Legal Futures Initiative and Doing Law Differently.

The Women Lawyers’ Forum (WLF) is the connecting point for women in the legal profession. Through the inter-lacing of the social and the professional, the WLF provides an opportunity for women in the law to meet and get to know each other better, for personal and professional benefit. The WLF organizes several events each year where women can engage, relax, and enjoy the company of other women who share the law as a common thread.

Wills & Estates Law Section Report 2015-2016

The Section continues to serve as a resource-in-waiting for MBA Council and membership on transportation issues.

During the 2015/2016 year (approximately the beginning of May, 2015 to the end of April, 2016), the Real Property Section's activities have been comprised in part of the general sessions it has conducted, and in part, of the Section's executive’s (i.e., Howard Nerman and Ned Brown) activities with respect to real property practice matters brought to their attention.

This year, the Legal Research Section organized five events. In October, we held a blended webcast/in-person session on the subject of “Legal Research Ethics”.

Labour Law Section Report 2015-2016

In September and in April 2016, the Chair, on behalf of the Executive, invited the Chief of Operations of Southern Manitoba District, Prairie Region, Canada Border Services Agency to speak to our Section. However, in both opportunities, the response was negative. CBSA management at National Headquarters still does not permit regional offices to meet with members of the Bar Association.

The General Practitioners’ Section has a new executive with the addition of Don O’Hara as vice-chair. Mr. O’Hara is also the Communication Officer for the National Small and Solo Firm Section of the CBA.

French Speaking Lawyers’ Section Report 2015-2016 Rapport de la section française de l’ABM 2015-2016 The French Speaking Lawyers’ S ection met with the AJEFM (association des juristes d’expression française du Manitoba) and Law Society to coordinate a follow -up session on the new language right obligations introduced in the professional code of conduct.
